What Is Ruby Laser?

The Ruby Laser is one of the earliest and most established medical lasers used in dermatology. It operates at a wavelength of 694nm, which is highly absorbed by melanin (pigment) and tattoo ink. This makes it exceptionally effective for treating pigmented lesions, sun spots, freckles, age spots, and certain tattoo colours — particularly black, blue, and green ink.

The Ruby Laser works by delivering short, high-energy pulses of red light that are selectively absorbed by pigment cells or tattoo ink particles. The energy shatters these particles into microscopic fragments, which are then naturally cleared by the body's immune system. The 694nm wavelength has a high affinity for melanin, meaning it can target pigmentation with great precision while minimising damage to surrounding skin.

Who Is It For?

Ruby Laser is suitable for individuals who want to treat:

  • Sun spots and age spots: Flat, brown pigmented lesions caused by sun exposure and ageing.
  • Freckles: Small, concentrated clusters of melanin that appear on sun-exposed areas.
  • Solar lentigines: Larger pigmented patches commonly found on the face, hands, and arms.
  • Tattoo removal: Black, blue, and dark green tattoos that are difficult to remove with other lasers.
  • Nevus of Ota and Ito: Deep blue-grey pigmentation that is present from birth or appears during adolescence.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Dark marks left behind after acne or skin injuries.

The Ruby Laser is most effective for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I to III). Your doctor will assess your skin type and pigmentation to determine if Ruby Laser is the best option for you.

How Ruby Laser Works

Before treatment, the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area for 30 to 60 minutes. Your doctor then uses a handheld Ruby Laser device to deliver precise pulses of 694nm red light to the pigmented areas or tattoo.

The laser energy is selectively absorbed by melanin or tattoo ink, causing rapid heating and fragmentation of the pigment particles. The surrounding skin remains largely unaffected due to the laser's selectivity. For pigmented lesions, the treated spots may darken immediately and form a thin crust before naturally flaking off over 7 to 14 days.

For tattoo removal, multiple sessions are needed to progressively lighten and remove the ink. Each session breaks down a layer of ink, and the body's immune system clears the fragments between sessions. Treatment sessions typically last 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size and number of lesions or the area of the tattoo.

Pain & Discomfort Level

Ruby Laser treatment may cause mild to moderate discomfort depending on the area being treated and individual pain tolerance. Patients often describe the sensation as a rubber band snapping against the skin or a brief stinging feeling. Topical numbing cream significantly reduces discomfort. After treatment, the area may feel warm and slightly tender for a few hours. Mild swelling and redness are common and typically resolve within 1 to 2 days. For tattoo removal, discomfort may be slightly higher due to the higher energy levels required to break down ink particles.

Results Timeline

Results from Ruby Laser depend on the condition being treated:

  • Sun spots and freckles: Treated spots darken and flake off within 7 to 14 days, revealing clearer skin underneath. Often, a single session is sufficient for small, superficial lesions.
  • Tattoo removal: Gradual fading with each session. Black and dark blue ink responds well, with significant fading after 4 to 6 sessions. Complete removal may require 8 to 12 sessions depending on ink depth and density.
  • Nevus of Ota: Improvement is seen progressively over 4 to 8 sessions, with the blue-grey pigmentation gradually lightening.

Spacing sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart allows the body time to clear fragmented pigment and optimise healing between treatments.

Cost of Ruby Laser in Malaysia

The cost of Ruby Laser treatment depends on the type of pigmentation, size of the treatment area, and number of sessions required. Pigmented lesion removal is typically priced per lesion or per session. Tattoo removal is often priced per session or per square inch. At Lovina Clinic, we offer transparent pricing and provide a detailed cost estimate during your consultation. Package discounts are available for multi-session treatments.
