How Mole Removal Works at Lovina Clinic
1. Consultation & Assessment. Dr. Hamidah will examine the mole, often using a dermatoscope for a detailed view. If the mole appears suspicious, a biopsy may be recommended.
2. Anaesthesia. Local anaesthetic is injected around the mole to numb the area completely.
3. Removal. Two common methods are used:
- Surgical excision: The mole and a small margin of surrounding skin are removed with a scalpel. Stitches may be required. The tissue can be sent for biopsy if needed.
- Shave removal: The raised part of the mole is shaved off flush with the skin surface. Usually no stitches are needed.
4. Aftercare. A bandage is applied. You will receive care instructions for the healing period. The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Pain Level
Mole removal is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. The anaesthetic injection causes a brief sting, but the area quickly goes numb. After the anaesthetic wears off, there may be mild discomfort for a day or two. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually sufficient if needed.
Healing & Recovery
Healing time depends on the removal method used:
- Shave removal: Healing takes 1 to 2 weeks. A scab forms and falls off naturally.
- Surgical excision with stitches: Stitches are removed after 7 to 14 days. A small scar will fade over time.
During healing, keep the area clean and dry, avoid sun exposure, and avoid picking at scabs. Apply any prescribed ointment as directed. Most patients return to normal activities immediately.
