What Is a Lipoma?
A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump that grows slowly under the skin. It is a benign tumour made of fat cells and is completely harmless. Lipomas feel doughy or rubbery to the touch and can move slightly when pressed. They are usually painless and grow very slowly over months or years.
Lipomas commonly appear on the shoulders, neck, back, arms, and thighs. While they are not cancerous and do not turn into cancer, some patients choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become uncomfortable.
Who Gets Lipomas?
Lipomas can affect anyone, but they are most common in:
- Adults between 40 and 60: Lipomas are most frequently diagnosed in middle age.
- People with a family history: A tendency to develop lipomas can run in families.
- People with certain conditions: Such as Gardner syndrome or Madelung disease.
- Both men and women: Lipomas affect all genders equally.
When Should You Remove a Lipoma?
Lipoma removal is usually elective. Common reasons include:
- Cosmetic concern: Visible lumps on the neck, arms, or back.
- Discomfort: If the lipoma presses on a nerve or becomes painful.
- Growth: If the lipoma grows rapidly or changes in texture.
- Size: Large lipomas (over 5cm) are often removed for comfort.
Any new lump should be examined by a doctor to confirm it is a lipoma and not something more serious.
How Lipoma Removal Works at Lovina Clinic
1. Consultation. The doctor examines the lump to confirm it is a lipoma. An ultrasound may be recommended for deeper lumps.
2. Anaesthesia. Local anaesthetic is injected to numb the area completely.
3. Excision. A small incision is made over the lipoma, and the fatty growth is carefully removed. The incision is closed with stitches. The procedure typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the size.
4. Aftercare. A bandage is applied. Stitches are removed after 7 to 14 days. You can go home immediately after the procedure.
Pain Level
Lipoma removal is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will feel no pain during the procedure. The anaesthetic injection causes a brief sting. After the procedure, there may be mild soreness for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Healing & Recovery
Healing takes about 1 to 2 weeks. Keep the wound clean and dry, avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a week, and attend your follow-up appointment for stitch removal. A small scar will remain but fades significantly over time.
Cost of Lipoma Removal in Malaysia
The cost depends on the size, location, and number of lipomas. At Lovina Clinic, we provide a full cost breakdown before the procedure. Our rates are competitive and transparent.
